Do you have a horse that is a hard keeper, or maybe their coat stays a little rough no matter what you adjust?

Do they fatigue easily, or have they started showing behaviors like chewing wood, licking dirt, or cribbing?

It’s easy to assume something complex is missing, but sometimes it comes back to something foundational.

Sodium.

Despite being one of the most important nutrients in a horse’s diet, sodium is also one of the most commonly deficient.

So even in well-managed diets, it’s easy for this piece to quietly fall short.

Sodium plays an essential role in the body. It supports hydration, and it also directly impacts how well the body can utilize nutrients like protein. A horse may be receiving adequate protein, but a sodium deficiency can mean the body is not able to fully utilize it as intended.

Sodium also drives electrical impulses that are essential for nerve signaling and for muscle contraction and relaxation. Without adequate sodium, these systems don’t operate efficiently.

When that happens, we may start to see signs like muscle fatigue, tremors, or decreased performance. In more severe cases, it can contribute to tying up (muscle cramping) or synchronous diaphragmatic flutter commonly known as “thumps.”

Horses also lose significant amounts of sodium through sweat and because they don’t store meaningful reserves of it, they depend on daily dietary intake to maintain balance especially during heat, work, or periods of increased stress.

Sodium is also part of a larger system. It works closely with other key electrolytes, particularly potassium and magnesium, to support fluid balance, neuromuscular function, and overall system stability.

When that relationship is out of balance, the system as a whole becomes less efficient.

Management choices are also important.

Salt blocks are often used by default, but they were designed for cattle, which have much rougher tongues. Many horses simply do not consume enough from a block to meet their needs.

In most cases, a loose salt source is more effective and more consistent.

For a 1,000 lb horse, a general baseline is about 1 tablespoon, twice per day. This is a starting point only and requirements will increase with heat, sweat loss, and workload.

Non-iodized table salt is an option, but it is lacking the trace minerals found in sea salt. I personally use Sea-90, which is affordable and easy to find.

Sometimes the difference between a horse that is just “getting by” and a horse that is thriving comes down to something simple and often overlooked.
